Life’s a Beach… Our Guide to the Many Beaches of Mykonos

https://www.beauchampestates.com/news/articles/lifes-a-beach-our-guide-to-the-many-beaches-of-mykonos

Located in the shimmering Aegean Sea, Mykonos is part of the Cyclades, a group of Greek islands southeast of mainland Greece, forming part of the wider Aegean archipelago.

The name refers to the islands centred around the sacred location of Delos, an uninhabited island considered to be the birthplace of Apollo and home to some of Greece’s most important archaeological ruins. Other Cycladic islands include Santorini, Paros, Antiparos, Naxos (the largest), Amorgos, Milos, Sifnos, Serifos, Tinos, Syros and of course Mykonos. Many have become popular holiday destinations, famed for their beaches, ancient sites, rugged landscapes and the blue of the Aegean Sea.

Mykonos lies between Tinos, Syros, Paros and Naxos and has long been a sought-after holiday destination. Its popularity is greater today than ever, particularly among those who expect the very best.

Any holiday spent on Mykonos is set to be memorable. The island is known for nightlife, beach clubs, international restaurants and some of the strongest summer retail in the world. But it is the beaches that bring people back, repeatedly. While many Beauchamp Estates Mykonos villas come with exceptional terraces and spectacular pools, there is nothing quite like a walk along the shore as the waves lap at your feet, or an afternoon on a lounger with the sea in front of you, as cocktail time approaches and Mykonos delivers another unforgettable sunset.

On the island, you are never far from a great beach. But the Island of the Winds, as Mykonos is affectionately known, can be gusty even on the hottest summer days, so it pays to know your beaches.

The best beaches in Mykonos are mainly along the south coast, where they are more protected from brisk winds. That is not to say the beaches to the north are not worth exploring, particularly for those who enjoy surfing and windsurfing, but they can be exposed, especially for sunbathing and swimming. As a result, they also tend to be far quieter.

Our top ten beaches

  • Psarrou

Around 5 km south-east of Mykonos Town (Chora), with beautiful sand and a strong choice of restaurants. There is a lively social scene here, which in high season can be dominated by Nammos. You can hire a cabana, or escape offshore for the day on a private yacht.

  • Agios Ioannis

Just 5 km south of Mykonos Town (Chora). The beach is relatively narrow but typically calm and quiet. One of the most beautiful beaches on the island, though it may feel too low-key for those seeking the famed Mykonos beach party spirit.

  • Elia

Around 11 km south-east of Mykonos Town and the longest beach on Mykonos. In peak season there are usually several buses a day from Mykonos Town. There is also a boat from Platys Gialos to Elia, plus parking for those who prefer to drive.

  • Super Paradise

Around 7 km south-east of Mykonos Town (Chora). A small beach with plenty of activity and several beach bars. There are no buses here, but small boats run from Platys Gialos and Paradise Beach.

  • Lia Beach

Around 14 km east of Mykonos Town (Chora). A beautiful beach that is excellent for swimming and offers good snorkelling. With no public transport, it tends to be less busy than some of the south-coast favourites.

  • Ornos

Around 3 km south of Mykonos Town (Chora). An idyllic bay with lovely surroundings and a good selection of restaurants. Ornos is one of the most family-friendly beaches on Mykonos.

  • Panormos

On the northern side of Mykonos and previously a well-kept secret, traditionally reached by car. This has changed slightly with the introduction of a seasonal bus service. Panormos is relaxed, with clear water, a good beach bar, music and plenty of umbrellas.

  • Paraga

Around 6 km south-east of Mykonos Town (Chora). Paraga is beautiful but busy, with several places to eat and drink, plus a great atmosphere throughout the day.

  • Paradise

Around 6 km south of Mykonos Town (Chora). Party central, with a lively crowd and bars that spill onto the sand. When the sun goes down, the volume goes up.

  • Agrari

Around 10 km south-east of Mykonos Town. Agrari is quieter and more secluded, with good sand. The lack of a direct bus helps keep it calmer, though there is a bus to Elia, from where it is a 15-minute walk.

Insider’s tip: If you are planning to visit one of the most popular beaches, such as Psarrou and especially if you would like to spend time at Nammos, we recommend reserving. The team at Beauchamp Estates Mykonos can assist with arrangements ahead of your stay.

Off-the-grid beaches

  • Agios Sostis

Around 5.9 km north-east of Mykonos Town (Chora). A serene beach with no amenities and clear water. A favourite for those who know the island and want a quieter experience.

  • Fokos

Around 11.5 km north-east of Mykonos Town (Chora). Natural, scenic and undeveloped, with no loungers or umbrellas and clear water that is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. There is one taverna nearby.

  • Ftelia

Around 6.2 km north-east of Mykonos Town (Chora). An established spot for windsurfers, with reliable wind most days. It is a little isolated, which creates a calm atmosphere and even in July and August it is rarely overwhelming.

Beauchamp Estates recommends

Roi Deldimou, Branch Manager, Beauchamp Estates Mykonos:
“My favourite beach is Agios Sostis. Whenever I am there, I love to have lunch at Kiki’s Taverna: a must.”

Gary Hersham, Founder, Beauchamp Estates:
“Mykonos is a vibrant summer destination and offers so much for young and old alike. It is always buzzing from Easter to early November.

There are many excellent beaches, almost one for each day you are there.

One of my favourites is Kalo Livadi, perfect for walks along the shore and water sports and home to the wonderful restaurant, Solymar.

In Chora, a world-class fish restaurant is Katrin’s, with fish caught daily. For those who like fun at supper, one must visit Sea Satin down in the old town.”
