From Icelandic Embassy to Arsenal History

We have completed the sale of a £22 million freehold house on Park Street, Mayfair.

Measuring 6,949 sq ft and arranged with seven bedrooms, the property has a rare provenance, serving as the former Icelandic Embassy and previously linked to Robin Vane-Tempest-Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh, who later became Chairman of Arsenal Football Club.

A collaboration at the top end of the market

The buyer was introduced by Yahya Swallem, our Senior Sales Negotiator here at Beauchamp Estates. The purchaser sought a turn-key and ideally “off-market” ultra-prime family home in one of London’s most sought-after addresses, with the transaction also viewed as a secure long-term investment.

Architectural Elegance and modern Mayfair living

Built in the classical style of Sir Christopher Wren, the Edwardian property boasts a brick façade, tall sash windows and ornate stucco detailing. The interiors were conceived by award-winning Dutch designer Marcel Wanders of Marcel Wanders Studio, Louis Vuitton’s design house. Accommodation is arranged over lower ground, ground and four upper floors, with features including a grand staircase, passenger lift, private roof terrace garden and direct access to the residents-only Green Street communal gardens.

A storied past

Originally designed by Wimperis and Simpson in 1913 and built in 1924-1925 by George Trollope & Sons – the firm behind Claridge’s, the Park Street mansion first became home to Robin Vane-Tempest-Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh, an MP, aristocrat and Chairman of Arsenal Football Club. In the 1930s, the house hosted celebrated Arsenal players including Cliff Bastin, Eddie Hapgood and Pat Beasley.

In 1949, the property was sold to the Government of Iceland, becoming the Icelandic Embassy and the Ambassador’s residence for almost 60 years. During this time, it was at the heart of the “Cod Wars” fishing disputes between the UK and Iceland, before being sold following the 2008 financial crisis.

The house was subsequently returned to residential use and underwent a full refurbishment to create the turnkey trophy home now sold by Beauchamp Estates.

Agent reflection

“Beauchamp Estates are delighted to have introduced the buyer who wanted a turn-key luxury family home in the heart of Central London in Mayfair, arguably the capital’s premier and most sought after address. We worked hard on this transaction resulting in this landmark deal, which is the biggest house sales in Mayfair during the first six months of 2025.”
